There are two reasons why you would need an IRS identity protection personal identification number (ID PIN) in order to file your tax return.

The first reason is if you have been a victim of ID theft and the IRS has fixed the resulting tax issues.  If this happens, you will need to use the IRS ID PIN in the future.

The second reason is because you have requested to have your tax account protected from a tax-related identity theft.  Why would you do this? Better safe than sorry?  Maybe you have someone in your life with your personal information that you no longer trust 100%?  Maybe you have heard directly from a friend or loved one the trouble the an false IRS filing creates?

Whatever the reason you are now using an IRS ID PIN, knowing how they work will ensure smooth sailing in your tax future.

When is an IRS IP PIN valid?

Each year the IRS will assign you a new IP PIN for that calendar year.  The number is valid from the date of issuance, mid-January, until mid-November.

The key to remember is that you must use this calendar year number for any tax return you file during that year-even prior year tax returns.

A new IP PIN will be assigned to your account each year.

Will the IRS send me a letter?

If the IRS originally assigns you an IP PIN due to an ID theft issue, the IRS will send you a notice in the mail.  The IRS will continue to send you a notice every January until…you access your IP PIN online.

You see, your IP PIN is available online using your Online Account.  Once you have opted in and obtained your IP PIN online the IRS will no longer send you a notice each year.  Rather you will need to login to your account each calendar year to obtain.

Additionally, if you previously requested an IRS IP PIN online, the will need to access the new PIN online each calendar year.

What do I do with the IP PIN?

First off, keep your IP PIN secure. Do not share it with anyone other than a trusted tax preparer.  Note: The IRS will NEVER ask for your IP PIN via phone/email/text.

When filing your return electronically the IP PIN will need to be entered as part of your tax data.  For paper filed tax returns, enter the IP PIN in the signature area of Form 1040.
